Disabled Holidays in Cornwall

Eden Project, Cornwall

Retaining one of the most distinctive cultural identities within England, Cornwall is a fascinating county to visit. There are spectacular landscapes, a temperate climate (compared with much of the UK) and an incredible variety of activities which means that even though Cornwall is tucked away in the South-West of England, it draws over five million tourists each year and has the variety of holidays to satisfy them all.

For disabled holidays in Cornwall, almost all of these myriad attractions are available and easily accessible. One of the most impressive tourist attractions in Cornwall is the Eden Project, alone drawing in one in eight of all visitors to Cornwall. The car park for disabled visitors is located close to the visitor's center, which has been designed to be on one level, removing any stairs or ramps. Linking all the areas and domes together, you have smooth ramps that allow easy travel for all mobility aids and with the steeper ramps, there are land trains with spaces for wheelchairs and staff available to assist. Whilst almost all of the areas in the biodomes are also ramped and do allow easy access to disabled visitors, some of the optional paths are not wheelchair accessible. However, almost all of the thirty five acres of the site are fully accessible so everyone can enjoy the flora and fauna of the Tropics and the Mediterranean as well as from more temperate climates. The Project was voted last year as the most accessible attraction within the UK. The Eden Project is an incredible experience for all senses and should be a cornerstone of any disabled holiday to Cornwall and should appear on the to-do list of anyone wanting disabled holidays in Cornwall.

So whilst you might want to take your holiday inland, a famous feature of Cornwall is its beaches and cliffs. If this is of interest, one of the most well known towns, famous for its beaches and scenery is Newquay. Possibly the most famous beach in Newquay is Fistral beach, a gorgeous west-facing bay. The beach has disabled access and easy access by car and bus for all holidaymakers. For a disabled holiday to Cornwall near Newquay, you could visit Porth Beach, a sandy cove with easy access for disabled visitors. The cove is on the same level as the nearby car park, allowing easy wheelchair access. Within Newquay itself, there is a shop mobility scheme where visitors with disabilities can hire motorized wheelchairs and scooters for either a day or half day at a time, to allow easy visits to the town center and an increased level of independence.

Of course, these are just a few ideas for disabled holidays in Cornwall. There are literally hundreds of attractions, activities and places for all visitors. If you’re a fan of art, there is a huge culture of art in Cornwall, for example the Tate St Ives is an incredible collection of art and with wheelchair access as well as allowing guide and hearing dogs into the facility, is accessible for anyone who wants to visit.

With all of this and much more than I could fit into an article, it is no wonder that Cornwall is such a draw for tourists and the number of accessible attractions means that for a disabled holiday in Cornwall, there is something for everyone.
