Our Cottages

Fowl Green Farm holiday cottages have been created from original stone farm buildings which are at least three hundred years old. In each cottage there remains evidence of their former life so the experience will, we hope, combine 21st century standards of comfort, wheelchair access, and convenience with a little of 18th century rural atmosphere.

All cottages are suitable for a person who needs to use a wheelchair, either some of the time or all of the time and may transfer independently or with assistance. Accommodation in the four cottages has least one ground floor bedroom and adapted shower room, natural slate/flagstone non-slip floors, under floor heating and fully equipped adapted kitchens. All cottages have wide doors in all rooms. There are no steps to any of the cottages. There are turning circles and unobstructed routes in each cottage. Each cottage has wooden garden furniture set out in the yard and access to barbecues.

All beds are firm and at a height of at least 450mm. Transfer space is available at both sides of the bed in the barn and cowbyre, but at one side only in the pigsties. There are higher and lower clothes hanging rails. All televisions have teletext and remote controls. Wall switches or sockets are at heights between 900 and 1200 mm. Different heights and style of seating is available.

Although hoists are not provided, all bed heights are sufficient to allow for use of a portable hoist. Bathrooms have room for a portable hoist. Showers all have thermostatic mixers, can be used either standing or sitting, and have fixed shower seats of generous size. A wheel-in shower chair and toilet riser seat is available. Please enquire on booking.

The Barn

The Barn used to be part barn, part milking parlour and part granary, now it is the largest cottage and has three double bedrooms, one downstairs and two upstairs. Central heating is under floor, which means no radiators downstairs and no cold spots plus plenty of hot water. The ground floor bathroom has grab rails, vanity basin with level taps and space under to access from a wheelchair, level access show area with thermostatically controlled shower. The Kitchen has different work surfaces, inset bowl with lever tap and is equipped with full size cooker with oven, fridge/ freezer and microwave.

The Cow Byre

The cowbyre was converted most recently. It was used as a milking parlour until the 1970s. The cows would walk up into their own stall and eat the food put in front of them in a trough as they patiently stood to be milked. Today the cowbyre is a ground floor cottage which sleeps four people in two ground floor bedrooms, a double and a twin. It is very accessible for wheelchair users. The bathroom has a roll-in shower (thermostatically controlled), vanity basin with lever taps and space under to access from a wheelchair, grab rails and Clos-o-mat toilet. The well equipped kitchen has different height work surfaces, built-in oven, hob and extractor, sink with lever tap, fridge/freezer and microwave.

The Top Pigsty

These were four small pigsties which were also used for weaning calves. They have rough stone walls and are now two studios, one with a mezzanine. The top pigsty sleeps two people and is accessible to wheelchair users.

The Bottom Pigsty

These were four small pigsties which were also used for weaning calves. They have rough stone walls and large stone troughs which form the base of the front wall. The feed could be poured in from the outside and the pigs or calves could eat from the trough inside without the door needing to be opened. This was extremely useful since small hungry animals invariably used to barge into whoever was feeding them and knock over the buckets of food. We have left the troughs and closed the gap to the outside to stop the draughts. The bottom pigsty sleeps four people.

* Both Pigsty cottages are completely accessible on the ground floor with roll-in shower room/toilet, vanity basin with lever taps and space under to access from a wheelchair. The double beds are situated on the ground floor and twin beds on the mezzanine. The kitchens are well equipped with different height work surfaces, with hob and basin set in, lever tap, combination microwave/grill/oven and fridge.

Our Facilities

Car parking is at the top of the yard, under cover and it is possible to leave the car within a few feet of the cottages. Smooth footpaths wind around to minimise the gradient making access easier for any visitors with walking impairments.

There is a laundry, which is free to use - just bring your washing and powder, and a pay phone. There is no signal for mobile phones here, so this is a good place to escape from the annoying phone calls.

The old cart shed is now a tea room, farm shop and play space for children. This is heated by an open log fire and is for groups to get together in the evening. The cart shed is also wheelchair accessible. Most of our farm produce is seasonal, but in the summer we sell fruit, vegetables and flowers as well as meat and products made from the wool of our Wensleydale sheep.

Holiday Care

A local care agency, Esk Moors Caring is available to assist visitors with personal care when on holiday. To discuss your needs with them, telephone them Monday -Friday, 10am - 12 pm and 2pm - 4pm.

Telephone number: 01287660244.

Exterior

Access into Fowl Green Farm yard is over a cattle grid and is clearly sign posted from the road. All cottages have space for a setting down point and car parking is close to all of the cottages. There are no designated car parking spaces, but there is plenty of space for accessing vehicles from the side or rear. There is both covered and open parking. Although the yard is on a gradient, footpaths lead to all cottages from the car parking area. There are no steps or ramps. There is also footpath access out of the yard, to the road or adjoining bridle path.

From the farm yard, accessible footpaths and picnic areas have been created. Power wheelchairs may be available to borrow, to take advantage of the farm land.

It is a working family farm which was bought by the Muir family in 1900. The present owners, Sue and Sandy live in the adjoining farmhouse. Livestock on the farm include black face sheep, free range hens, highland cattle and last but not least, Nell, a working sheepdog.

The Farm has many features to interest the visitor but it also provides a base for lots of things to see and do with transport links by road and rail within easy reach. In summer, take the moors bus - travel all day or get on and off in all the small villages stopping off at special sites of interest. Visit the coastal villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend and spend the day at Saltburn, the nearest seaside town.

As part of a conservation scheme, hundreds of oak trees have been planted and wildflower meadows created. Since sheep have been excluded from the wood, a variety of wild flowers have begun to grow there including colourful orchids and primroses.

Throughout there are wheelchair accessible footpaths and picnic sites in woodland, meadow and stream side areas, so that all the family can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. The area is rich in wildlife including deer, rabbits and other small animal, a wide variety of birds and wild flowers.
